Providence Moments and Goods is very happy to welcome Manon Boulart again, in a different space like Le Palmier in Hendaye. She has already showed her work at Providence in Guéthary, back in 2017. A party is organized in her honor next Thursday, August 10th, 7pm, with Buvette Dj Set: come and party with us!
Below her words to describe this new exhibition named “Peintures du Dimanche” / “Sunday Paintings”.
“Peintures du Dimanche is a tribute to the Basque Country and its painters. Those of who paint on Sundays and others.
Digging into pictorial iconography, Euskal Herri (Basque Country) reveals itself portrayed from all angles. It is undoubtedly the 20th century that saw the emergence of the most abundant work with a group of nine painters, Ramiro Arrue leading the movement, with his accurate way of portraying people in their environment. I have always kept in mind the painters of my childhood: Pito, in my parents' kitchen, Antonio Uria Monzón on the fireplace, and the painters of Place Louis XIV (and this portrait of me as a child, drawn in red, failed but endearing).
This winter, caught up in the financial gain of victory, I presented a painting at an art fair in Saint Jean de Luz. According to my own convictions, the paintings presented by the other artists were not really convincing. However, mine was not selected, not even exhibited, among the 210 works signed by Sunday/Amateur artists. Frustrated, amused, but my bank account which remained empty...
These "Sunday Paintings", exhibited in Hendaye, present landscapes of the Basque Country. Nothing but rural paintings that should have been done on a Sunday.
Doubtless chauvinistic, old-fashioned perhaps, but sincere, for sure. And if these are only love postcards made by a regional painter, this demanding concept is flawless.
"Peintures du dimanche" est un hommage au Pays Basque et à ses peintres. Ceux du dimanche et puis les autres.
En fouillant dans son iconographie picturale, l’Euskal Herri se dévoile portraiturée sous tous ses angles. C’est sans doute le XXe siècle qui vit jaillir l’œuvre la plus foisonnante avec le groupe des neuf, Ramiro Arrue en tête et sa manière si juste de portraiturer un peuple et son environnement. J'ai toujours gardé, ancré à l'esprit, les peintres de mon enfance : Pito, dans la cuisine de mes parents, Antonio Uria Monzón sur la cheminée, les peintres de la Place Louis XIV (et ce portrait de moi enfant, dessiné à la sanguine, raté mais attachant).
Cet hiver, happée par le seul gain financier de la victoire, j’ai présenté une toile à un salon Luzien. Selon mes convictions propres, les peintures proposées par les autres artistes étaient vraiment pas terribles. Pourtant, c'est la mienne qui n’a pas été retenue, même pas exposée, parmi les 210 œuvres signées par des artistes du dimanche. Vexation, amusement, et mon compte en banque qui demeure vide…
Ces "Peintures du dimanche", exposées à Hendaye, présentent des paysages du Pays Basque. Rien d'autre que des peintures rurales qui auraient du être faites un dimanche.
Chauvines sans doute, ringardes, peut-être, sincères, à coup sûr. Et si ce ne sont que des cartes postales amoureuses réalisées par une peintre régionale alors, le concept exigeant est un sans faute.
